How to play Tarneeb
- Sit across from your partner: four players, two teams, and you win or lose together.
- Everyone gets 13 cards from a standard 52-card deck.
- Bid: starting left of the dealer, each player says how many tricks their team will win, from 7 to 13, or passes. Every bid must beat the last one. If all four pass, the cards are dealt again.
- The highest bidder chooses the trump suit, the tarneeb, and leads the first trick.
- Play one card each in turn. Follow the suit that was led if you can; if you can't, play any card, including a trump.
- The highest card of the led suit wins the trick, unless someone trumped it: then the highest trump takes it.
- After 13 tricks the hand is scored and the deal moves on, until a team reaches the target.
Tarneeb rules at a glance
- Players: 4, in two teams of two (2 vs 2). Partners sit opposite each other.
- Bids: 7 to 13 tricks. Each bid must be higher than the last, and you can always pass.
- Trump: chosen by the player who wins the bid.
- Bid made: the bidding team scores every trick it won.
- Bid missed: the bidding team loses the number it bid (bid 8, win 6: minus 8).
- Defending team: always scores the tricks it won.
- Target: 31 points in Quick, 41 points in Full. You must reach it while ahead; a tie plays on.
- Kaboot: win all 13 tricks in one hand and you earn a bonus.

- Quick (to 31): about 12 minutes.
- Full (to 41): about 18 minutes.
- Players: 2 vs 2. Computer players can take any empty seat.
Tips to win at Tarneeb
- Count your longest suit before you bid. Five or six cards in one suit, with an ace or king, is a good reason to take trump.
- Listen to your partner. A partner who bids is showing strength, so only take the contract from them with a strong hand of your own.
- Bid what you need, not more. A made bid scores all the tricks you take anyway, so a higher bid only adds risk.
- When your team holds most of the trumps, draw them early so your side-suit winners are safe.
- Remember who has run out of which suit. A rival who can't follow may trump your king.
- On defence, every trick you win scores and pushes the bidders toward a miss.
