El-Shayeb, “the old man”, is the region’s Old Maid, played by families from the Gulf to the Levant. Three Kings are taken out of the deck, so the King of hearts is left alone: it can never make a pair. Players draw blind from each other’s hands, pairs go out, and whoever is left holding the King of hearts at the end is the shayeb and comes last.

On Rayoosh, El-Shayeb is free, with no money and no betting. Play with 3, 4 or 5 players, let computer players fill the empty seats, and earn Pearls by finishing place; Pearls can never be bought or cashed out. Rayan’s short How to play lesson shows the pairs, the blind draw and how to hide the old man, and a private table brings the whole family in with one link.
How to play El-Shayeb
- One 52-card deck without jokers. The Kings of spades, diamonds and clubs are taken out, leaving 49 cards. The King of hearts is the shayeb: the only card that can never pair.
- The cards are dealt one at a time, starting with the player after the dealer. With 4 players that is 13, 12, 12 and 12.
- A pair is two cards of the same rank, whatever their suits: 7♣ and 7♥ are a pair. Right after the deal, every pair in every hand goes to the middle by itself.
- On your turn, the player before you holds out their cards face down. Tap one to take it.
- If the card you take matches one in your hand, the pair goes out at once. Then the next player draws from you.
- You may rearrange your hand or tap Shuffle at any time, so nobody knows where the King of hearts is hiding.
- When your last card goes, you are out and take the next finishing place. Players who are out are skipped.
- The round ends when one player is left holding only the King of hearts. That player is the shayeb and comes last.

Tips for El-Shayeb
- El-Shayeb is mostly luck, so enjoy it: what you control is where you hide the old man.
- Holding the King of hearts? Move it or tap Shuffle before the next player draws.
- Don’t leave it in the same spot every time: people remember.
- Watch the card counts. A player with one or two cards left is about to go out.
- Against computer players any spot is as good as another: they draw at random and never see your cards.
- In a Full game every place counts: coming second every round can beat one win and a few last places.

Questions and answers
Is El-Shayeb on Rayoosh free? Is there real money?
It is completely free, with no real money and no betting. You earn Pearls by finishing place, and Pearls can never be bought or cashed out.
Which card is the shayeb?
The King of hearts. The other three Kings are taken out of the deck before the deal, so the King of hearts has no partner and can never pair. Whoever holds it at the end is the shayeb.
Do I have to throw my pairs myself?
No. Pairs go to the middle by themselves, right after the deal and whenever a card you draw makes a pair.
Can I hide the King of hearts?
Yes. Drag your cards into any order or tap Shuffle at any time. The player drawing from you only sees the backs.
How many players can play El-Shayeb?
3, 4 or 5, each for themselves. Computer players can fill any empty seat.
How is El-Shayeb scored?
Each round pays by finishing place, for example 300, 150, 75 and 25 with four players. After 3 rounds (Quick) or 5 (Full) the highest total wins.
