How to play Tarneeb Estimar

1. Three players, each for themselves. Everyone gets 16 cards from a 52-card deck, aces high, and the last 4 cards are set aside face down as extras.
2. Targets: in the first deal, whoever holds the 7♥ must take 8 tricks, the next player 5 and the last 3. Each new deal the 8 moves one seat on.
3. From the second deal, players who were up give cards to players who were down (see the exchange below).
4. The 8-player names any suit as trump.
5. The 4 extras are turned face up for everyone and go into the 8-player's hand. They then put down any 4 cards face down.
6. The 8-player leads the first of 16 tricks. Follow suit, and beat the best card of that suit if you can. If you have none of the suit, you must trump.
7. The highest trump wins the trick, or else the highest card of the led suit. The winner leads the next trick.
8. Each player scores tricks minus target: +1 for every trick over, −1 for every trick short.

Estimar targets, exchange and rules at a glance

• The targets 8, 5 and 3 add up to 16, the number of tricks, so the scores of a deal always add up to zero.
• Over three deals, every player takes the 8, the 5 and the 3 once.
• The exchange: with one player up and two down, the up player gives each down player as many cards as that player was down. With two up and one down, each up player gives the down player as many cards as they were up.
• For every card given, the receiver hands back their highest card of that suit, which can be the same card if they hold nothing higher. Only the two players involved see the cards.
• Compulsory play: while the trick has not been trumped, you must beat the best card of the led suit if you can. Out of the suit? You must trump, and over-trump the best trump if you can.
• With neither the led suit nor a trump, play any card.
• If the 7♥ lands among the extras in the first deal, the cards are shuffled and dealt again.

Tarneeb Estimar in Rayoosh

• Players: 3, each for themselves. Computer players can take any empty seat.
• Mode: Classic. The 7♥ names the first 8-player, and the targets move every deal.
• Quick: 3 deals, about 8 minutes, so everyone plays each target once. A tie for first adds 3 more deals once; if it is still tied, you share first place.
• Full: first to 12 points while leading alone, about 28 minutes.
• Pearls by finishing place: 35, 15 and 5 in Quick; 70, 30 and 10 in Full. They are never bought or cashed out.
• Works on phones, tablets, computers and TVs with a remote, in Arabic, English and Hindi.

Tips to win at Tarneeb Estimar

• As the 8-player, name the suit with honours and more than four cards. Side aces and kings, and short suits you can trump, help too.
• Use the swap to make a void: keep the useful extras and put down the low cards of a short suit.
• When you give cards, give low cards in suits where you lack the top honours: the receiver must hand back their highest card of that suit.
• Cash winners that can't be trumped, and draw trumps when you hold the top trump and length.
• Lead a singleton to empty that suit, so you can trump it later.
• In second seat, play low when you can't be sure to win; in last seat, win as cheaply as you can.
